Course Planning for New and Exploring Students

Students interested in a German Studies major or minor can begin in their first year. Wondering which German language course to start with?

  • If you have never taken or learned German before, you should enroll in GER 101: Beginning German I + GER 102: Beginning German 2 + GER 201: Intermediate German I
  • If you have already taken some German, you must first take the online placement assessment. This placement test will give you an indication of which course you should start with. Please take this test only once.
  • Students who place into "202+" should consult with the chair of German Studies.

AP/IB Credit and Advanced Placement

Students with AP or IB credit in German may take the online placement assessment for entry into a 200-level GER course. AP/IB credit in German does not fulfill the language competency general education requirement.

Declare a Major/Minor

All students are expected to declare a major before the end of sophomore year. Ideally, sophomore students will declare a major (and switch to an advisor in the major) before advance registration advising begins in spring term.

Major Advising

All students will transition to a major advisor upon declaration. The major advisor will help students plan their coursework to satisfy requirements for the major, select courses in other areas to complement the major or satisfy personal interests, and prepare for their Senior Experience. Prospective German Studies majors can consult with any of the following German faculty about serving as a major advisor:

Add a Major Advisor

Need help identifying an advisor in the major? Students can contact advising@lawrence.edu for assistance with advisor matching.

Minor Advising

Students do not need an official advisor for the German Studies minor. Instead, German Studies minors are encouraged to consult with the department chair or other German faculty for advice on course selection and satisfying minor requirements.

Additional Student Resources

If you still have questions about advising support related to the German Studies program, we invite you to contact the department chair.
