Why join EXPLORE sophoMORE your second year at Lawrence?

As a Sophomore you are at a unique phase in your academic, social, and spiritual development. EXPLORE sophoMORE offers a small group setting where you can engage in big thinking, honest discussion, and deep exploration that will help you excel in your transition from "first year student who is just trying to survive" to "upperclass student who has it figured out."

You’ll form a tight-knit community of folks to walk alongside as you all gain insights in traversing the challenges and big questions that accompany a college experience as well as life after Lawrence. Over the course of the program, we hope you’ll come closer to answering the following:

  • Who am I? Why does it matter? (Identity)
  • Who do I care about and belong with? How do I connect to others/the world around me? (Community)
  • Who and What do I want to become, and Why? (Purpose)

What's included in the program?

Explorers enjoy weekly gatherings where you will have opportunities to connect deeper with yourself and strengthen interpersonal skills through guided reflections, dynamic activities, and direct mentorship from your professional staff facilitators. Each gathering will begin with a communal meal catered from off campus (input welcomed on preferred restaurants)!

Who are the participants?

All participants will be second year students who you will get to know well throughout the program. Like you, all participants see their time in college as organic and emerging and aspire towards a purposeful life at Lawrence and beyond.

What is the commitment level?

Mondays 5:00-6:30pm at the Center for Spiritual and Religious Life

  • Winter Term – Weeks 4,5,6,7,8
  • Retreat off campus – Sunday, March 27 (last day of Spring Break)
  • Spring Term – Weeks 1,2,3,4,5

EXPLORE sophoMORE has been intentionally designed with the hope that participants will view attendance and engagement in the program as a “want to/get to” rather than a “should do/have to.” The schedule has been created with the consideration of time periods where students tend to experience increased stress levels (midterms, finals, etc.) No additional work required outside of the gatherings, though we will set intentions for each week you're encouraged to be mindful of.
