Appleton/Fox Cities Information

Lawrence University is located in Appleton, a city of over 70,000 in northeastern Wisconsin. As the largest of the "Fox Cities," Appleton is part of the Appleton-Oshkosh-Neenah metropolitan area of over 250,000 residents. Green Bay is located 30 minutes northeast of Appleton, and the larger cities of Milwaukee and Madison are both less than two hours away. Most Chicago destinations can be reached in just over three hours. Appleton is also served by several major airlines at the Outagamie County airport.

The city of Appleton and the Lawrence campus are nestled on the Fox River of historic paper industry fame. Lawrence's tree-lined Main Hall Green is visible from the heart of downtown, only a few blocks away from campus. Appleton is an economic and cultural center for the area, and the revitalized downtown features a performing arts center, summer and winter farmer's markets, and community festivals. The Fox River Mall, Wisconsin's second largest shopping center, is located in the adjacent community of Grand Chute, ten minutes west of downtown Appleton. The Fox Cities are also home to Class A professional baseball (Timber Rattlers). Abounding with parks, recreation facilities, museums, shopping, and dining, Appleton is an inviting city for visitors and residents alike.

The Appleton area is also rated one of the safest (lowest crime) metropolitan areas according to the Places Rated Almanac and is a friendly and increasingly diverse community.

About Lawrence University

Lawrence University, founded in 1847, is one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the nation. In addition, the campus boasts a nationally recognized conservatory of music. The academic year is structured around three, ten-week terms spanning mid-September through early June. The residential campus of 84 acres and 32 buildings supports the academic and extracurricular pursuits of some 1400 students from 47 states and 42 countries.
