Registration Instructions

Registration on the Lawrence University Network is necessary in order to access the Internet, printers and shared document folders across campus. Students should follow this guide sequentially to successfully register a personal computer.

STEP 1:  Wireless Connection

There are several secure wireless local area networks (WLAN) identified on campus. Student personal devices connect to the LUwireless network. Other wireless access points are NOT permitted on the Lawrence network as they can interfere with the Lawrence wireless network.

Please contact the Helpdesk at 920-832-6570 or stop by the Helpdesk, in Library Room 201, if you have difficulty connecting wirelessly.

Windows 7

  1. Click on the wireless connection icon on the bottom-right corner of your screen, select “LUwireless” and then click Connect.
  2. When prompted, enter VIKING\your Lawrence username in the “Username” field.
  3. Enter your Lawrence password in the “Password” field and click OK. (If you get the login prompt again, you might have to input your information again.)
  4. Click on Connect when prompted.

Windows Vista

  5. Enter your Lawrence password in the “Password:” field.
  6. Enter VIKING in the Logon domain: field.
  7. Click on OK. Click OK on the “Validate Server Certificate” window.
  8. After a few seconds, you should get a screen that says you have successfully connected. You can check the boxes next to “Save this network” and “Start this connection automatically” if they are not already checked.
  9. Click Close.

Note: You will not have full internet access until you complete the rest of the process below.

STEP 2: UPDATE OR INSTALL ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE

All computers must have current antivirus software installed in order to register on the Lawrence University Network. Download any updates available for your antivirus software. (Note: Although you will not have access to the majority of the Internet until your computer is registered, you WILL have access to both antivirus updates and the Lawrence University home page.)

If you currently do not have antivirus software, or if your subscription has expired, Lawrence University has suggestions for (free) anti-virus software based on your operating system. You can find these at:

http://www.lawrence.edu/info/offices/technology_services/faqs/security-and-anti-virus

STEP 3: UPDATE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM

All computers must have current operating system software in order to register on the LU Network. Please follow these steps to ensure your operating system has the latest software updates. (Note: Although you will not have access to the majority of the Internet until your computer is registered, you WILL have access to operating system updates.)

  1. Go to Start – All Programs – Windows Update.
  2. In the left pane, click Check for updates and wait while Windows searches for updates.
  3. If any updates are found, click Install Updates. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password and provide confirmation.
  4. Repeat 1-3 until you are advised that no more updates are available.

STEP 4: NETWORK REGISTRATION

  1. Open an Internet Browser (such as Firefox).
  2. A security page should appear (if not navigate to cnn.com to force the page to appear). If using Internet Explorer, click "Continue to this Website (not recommended)". If using Firefox, click Add an Exception. Click Get certificate. Click Confirm security exception.

  5. Enter your Username and Password. Select appropriate device for the type of connection and click Download.
  6. A download window will appear.
  7. A Windows User Account Control prompt will appear. Click Yes.

Your computer will be scanned for required software by the Bradford agent. Once the scan is complete, either a success/failure page will appear. If the failure page appears, read the message carefully. It will tell you either your Operating System has more updates or your antivirus has more updates.
