Lawrence University Research Fellows (Summer 2022)

Administrative Assistant:  Jane Uitenbroek in the Briggs Hall Office provides administrative assistance for the Lawrence University Research Fellows program.  Jane can assist with forms and reimbursement requests and answer questions.

LU-RF Stipend:  $4,160 for a full-time 10-week summer research session (June 13 to August 19). Salaries will be prorated for students working fewer hours or weeks. Students are paid over five pay periods. LU-RF students do not submit time sheets, so it is up to the faculty mentor to manage their work hours. Stipends should be arranged early in spring term by submitting the Faculty Grant Statement for Student Employment form to Ellen Walsh in the Briggs Hall office.

Project Expenses:  Some projects include funding for materials, laboratory supplies, or travel to field sites. Financial forms and receipts should be submitted to Jane Uitenbroek in the Briggs Hall Office.

Housing for On-Campus LU-RFs:  Campus housing is provided free of charge to students working with Lawrence faculty. Students must submit a housing application to Campus Life to guarantee a spot. Students may choose to live off campus at their own expense.  Questions should be directed to Campus Life.

Housing and Travel Allowance for Off-Campus LU-RFs:  Students working with affiliated faculty at other universities can be reimbursed for travel (up to $500) and for housing (up to the cost of Lawrence summer housing, $655). Students will need to submit reimbursement requests with receipts to Jane Uitenbroek in the Briggs Hall Office.

Summer Research Kickoff Lunch:  On-campus LU Research Fellows and faculty mentors should attend the LU-RF Kickoff Lunch in mid-June.

Summer Research Poster Symposium:  All summer LU-RF students should plan to present a poster of their research at the Summer Research Poster Symposium held early in the fall term.

Student Conference Travel

Some LU-RF funding sources offer support for students to present their research at a professional conference.  To request funding, the faculty mentor should send an email to the Associate Dean of the Faculty (assoc_dean_fac@lawrence.edu) with the following information:

  • Student names
  • Conference name, dates, and location
  • Whether the research they will present was summer (or December) research, Senior Experience, or other.
  • Estimated expenses for travel (airfare and/or mileage), lodging, meals, local transportation, and conference fees. (Students are expected to register at the student rate and share rooms where possible. Expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with Lawrence's Travel and Business Expenses policy.)
