Summer Institute Schedule of Events

The Summer Institute program combines academic preparation, resource introduction, and social engagement. SI participants are expected to engage in all scheduled activities.

In order to know where to be and when, SI participants can see a calendar at the link below which is updated daily as needed. Participants will also receive a paper copy upon the start of the program, but are encouraged to use the link below every morning to see if any changes have been implemented for that day (rain-site for outdoor activities, workshop is canceled or changed, etc.)

Summer Institute 2021 Calendar

Before you arrive – activating your LU network account:

Beginning on August 1, all information and updates for SI (after this letter) will be sent to your LU e-mail address, so you will need to set up your LU network login and e-mail access if you have not yet done so. You will find instructions for activating your LU network account and accessing your email here:
Most communication from the university and specifically from your professors will also come to your LU e-mail, so it’s important to develop the habit of checking your LU email regularly.
PLEASE NOTE:  Your LU e-mail has a long form and a short form, typically and respectively. This sometimes causes some confusion, but both addresses send messages to the same place, so you don’t need to worry about checking two different addresses. LU asks that you use the long form to avoid revealing your network username to other folks/organizations.

Arrival & Check-In

As folks approach and arrive on campus, please know that we currently have multiple projects happening in order to update our residential and community spaces and make our campus as accessible as possible. Since you’ll be arriving on campus earlier than most students, many of these projects will still be on-going. None of them will disrupt the Summer Institute program; however, some areas of residence halls and community spaces may still have work being finished on them. We appreciate your understanding.

Please arrive to campus on Sunday, August 15th between 8am and 11:30am in order to check in before noon. Due to flight scheduling, some international students may need to arrive on Saturday, August 14th.

Check-in will be open from 8am-Noon at one location: the Warch Campus Center (number 33 on the campus map), located at 711 E. Boldt Way. The best way to manage the flow of folks arriving that day and checking in (as we will also have fall athletes arriving that day) will be to park on a street near the Campus Center, or park near your residence hall building, and walk to Warch Campus Center to check in and get keys. If you believe you will need to arrive to check-in after Noon on Sunday, August 15th, please contact with your arrival date/time to campus and reason for late arrival, and she will instruct you on your check-in plan.

Moving In

Due to changing needs around the pandemic and spread of COVID-19 variants, we need to limit the amount of move-in helpers each student can have. At this time, we are only allowing TWO (2) move-in helpers per Summer Institute student at one time as you are actively moving into your residence hall. These may be your parents/guardians or other family members that you bring with you on your move-in day. If you have additional family members with you on that day, we request that they remain outside of the residence hall as you actively move in.
Everyone will be required to wear masks indoors – regardless of vaccination status - during move-in day to mitigate the risks of spread. This includes all Summer Institute students and their move-in helpers. You will be able to move your items in and get settled between 8am and 1pm. Most of our residence halls do NOT have elevators, so please plan accordingly with your items, the size of any totes or boxes you bring, etc.
More info. for first year students will be coming via your Lawrence email address regarding housing and planning your move/what to bring for your room, so please check your Lawrence email.

Plan for Parents/Guardians/Family

There will be lawn games and a gathering on Main Hall Green (between numbers 14 and 27 on the map) for participants and their families to meet the Program Assistant staff from 1-3pm. Masks will not be required outdoors at this time. There will be a welcome and orientation session for students and their families at 3pm in our Chapel (number 19 on the map), followed by an opportunity for families to have a Q&A with the directors and leadership of Summer Institute. This will also be when we ask folks to do their goodbyes with students, as the students will be going off to start further orientation sessions for Summer Institute to get them ready for class the following day.
Currently, we are not requiring mask-wearing in the Chapel, as we will be able to have family pods spread out. Masks are encouraged for anyone unvaccinated, including children under 12.
As with everything during the global pandemic, some of the requirements and restrictions above are subject to change as needed through our Lawrence Pandemic Planning Team who use the CDC and other health leaders to determine our best course forward in order to be engaged in a safe and healthy way on our campus community together, so we thank you for your patience and flexibility as this academic year unfolds.
